Men's Bible Study
Written by Pastor Forshee

Looking forward to sharing God's Word with about 100 men here at Great Hills tomorrow on Sept. 2 as we kick off our men's Bible study.  I am preaching from 1 Kings 17-19 and looking at Elijah a great man of God who had a nature like ours says James 5:17.  He had great faith at times and other times he gave in to great fear.  The Bible tells the true story so we can learn from other's successes and failures.  Elijah trusted God at Carmel and God moved mightily in consuming the sacrifice by fire (1 KIngs 18).  But in 1 Kings 19 he fled in fright when Jezebel threatened him.  We can live on one of two planes-- either faith or fear.  I want to live in the realm of faith when I trust God and not lean on my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).

-          Abraham Lincoln was a remarkable man.  I encourage you to read David Donald’s biography of our 16th president.  Talk about a man who had every excuse to be fearful and quit.  Even before he made it to the White House after he had been elected as the next president, in the words of Donald, p. 267, “the country was falling to pieces.”  On December 20, 1860 South Carolina withdrew from the Union and by the end of January 1861 the following states followed suit: FL, MS, AL, GA, and LS, “and secession was underway in TX.”  (Ibid.)  When Lincoln said good-bye to his hometown of Springfield IL on his way to Washington DC, he told those gathered, “I now leave, not knowing when, or whether ever, I may return, with a task before me greater than that which rested upon Washington.  Without the assistance of that Divine Being, who ever attended him, I cannot succeed.  With that assistance I cannot fail. . . . let us confidently hope that all will yet be well.  To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell.”  (Donald, p. 273)

-          Against all odds, Lincoln chose to trust God and not cave in to fear.  He also said on another occasion about faith or belief, “Believing things that you can see and touch means you don’t believe at all, but to believe in what you cannot see is a victory and a blessing.”  (Jack Newman sent this Lincoln quote to me from a speech he gave at the Austin Tennis Academy.)

May the Lord bless you as you walk by faith and not sight (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Dr. Roy Fish once told our class in seminary that we do not need impressions when we have commissions.  What a powerful statement.  We do not need to wait until we feel emotionally led to help someone or share Christ with them because God has already commanded us to do these things in the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-38 and Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20).  This Saturday our church here in Austin TX, Great Hills Baptist Church, is going to east Austin and participate in the Illuminate Austin outreach, and I am very much looking forward to it. Please pray for us as we share the love of Jesus in practical ways.  And pray for me as I will be one of the preachers preaching the gospel.

In a couple of months I am going to India to minister with my friend Finny Matthews in Lucknow, India.  We are going to preach and encourage pastors who were just recently attacked by radical Hindus for their preaching of the gospel.  I ask for your prayers for our team as we go to share Christ and encourage these precious pastors who are persecuted for their faith.

Our TV ministry continues to go strongly and we so very much appreciate all your prayers and financial support for this endeavor.  We continue to broadcast on DIREC TV each Sunday at 12:30 CST.

Let me know if I can serve you or pray for you.  I am so grateful to God for allowing me to preach Christ and serve Him.  My family ad I enjoy living in Austin and ministering here in this great city.  God is blessing Great Hills Baptist Church and we are reaching out and touching many in Jesus' name.  May God continue to bless you and use you powerfully to broadcast His name and fame to your neighbors and the nations.

God continues to bless DFEA and I am so grateful.  We had a wonderful 2 days at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Durham, NC with Pastor Don Chasteen and his fine folks.  This is such a strong, healthy church led by a real man of God who is humble and passionate for the things of God.  I just love Bro Don and Scarlet Chasteen, faithful soldiers of Christ.

I am going to India in October and looking forward to serving Christ with my good friend Finny Matthews who preached for us here at Great Hills on Sunday and our people loved him and his sweet family.  God is using AIM to touch the nations of India and Nepal and I am so honored to be a part of this great ministry.  Pray for us please as we go to India.

God is moving in Austin TX, and I am excited about all He is doing.  We are gearing up for our outreach event called Illuminate Austin and it is going to be in east Austin August 21 and I get the honor of serving and also preaching outdoors; pray for us please.

Our TV ministry continues to go well both on the local KVUE ABC channel here locally and the DFEA on NRB on DIREC TV.  A 55 year old man called in and prayed to receive Christ as Lord and Savior on Sunday; thank You Jesus.

And today I had lunch with Dr,. Ralph Smith former pastor of the Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin.  What a delightful, brilliant man and I was very honored to spend some time with him today.

Blessings to you as you read this and let me know if I can pray for you.

Leighton, our 16 year old, was accepted into the Austin Tennis Academy and will practice 3 hours a day for 5-6 days a week--intense!

I am preaching at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Durham, NC on Sunday and Monday August 8-9.

God continues to bless and use the TV broadcast on DIREC TV.

Jesus is coming again and I am excited!

This summer is flying by!  We are getting adjusted to beautiful Austin TX.  Ashley's sister and brother-in-law came to visit last weekend and we had a nice time showing them the city and the highlight for me was Barton Springs at Zilker Park.  One of Ashley's best friends in the world, Debbie Palmer, and her two girls are coming next week and I am sure they will have a great time.

I am so busy but love it.  God continues to bless us here at Great Hills Baptist Church.  I preached last night at our student's gathering called Elevate and two teens prayed to receive Christ as did a 29 year old man who showed up. Wow, so grateful to God for the power of His Word.

On Tuesday of this week Russell Hartsfield and Brad Roberts (godly, talented men) with the media ministry here at GHBC worked with me as we taped new endings to both the ABC local broadcast here in Austin on KVUE and the national broadcast through DIREC TV.  I continue to hear from people across our nation who tune in and watch us each week.  Thank you Lord for using this ministry of media to touch many with the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Word of God.

Looking forward to preaching in Durham, NC at Ridgecrest Baptist Church on August 8-9, 2010.  If you are in the RDU area come out and worship the LORD with us.  I always enjoy being with Pastor Don Chasteen and his sweet wife Scarlet.

Have a blessed day and weekend, and let me know if I can pray for you.
