Today, we will close with a brief look at the last two Great Awakenings that impacted our nation and some other parts of the world.

The third Great Awakening has a few titles: the Prayer Revival, the Revival of 1858, and the Layman's Revival. It started when God moved in the heart of a layman named Jeremiah Lanphier who lived in New York City. He invited others to join him in a prayer meeting, and only a few came for the first few weeks... but that changed. Others gradually joined him, and within 6 months, 50,000 people were praying at noon for revival across the eastern part of the USA. In Philadelphia, a man began a prayer meeting, and soon 6,000 people were gathering daily for prayer. The revival continued for 4 months, attracting 150,000 people with 10,000 of them being converted to Christ!

My mentor, Dr. Roy Fish, wrote his doctoral dissertation on the Revival of 1858. It was a mighty movement of God began by God's people praying. Here are some results of this awakening:

God was exalted. This was the only awakening without a well-known leader.
There was a wonderful spirit of cooperation among believers. Churches united for the purpose of prayer.
It had worldwide implications. It spread to places like England, Ireland, and Scotland.
There were around 1 million people converted to Christ in the USA when the population of the whole country was only 30 million. Can you imagine if God were to do this today? What if almost 11 million people came to faith in Jesus in the USA in a year? God can do anything!
The Revival strongly influenced the ministry of D.L. Moody, who would go on to become one of the greatest evangelists in the history of our faith.

The last awakening is the Global Awakening of 1904-1908. This revival began in Wales as God stirred the heart of a young preacher named Evan Roberts. There were 100,000 people converted to Christ in this small European country. The revival spread to the USA, and many denominations reported record growth.
