"How I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it
to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house."
(Acts 20:20)
Ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, about whom I wrote yesterday, has perfected a lens replacement procedure called the "Forever Young Lens". He has restored sight to many who now no longer have to wear glasses or contact lenses. I have always been fascinated by the human eye. It is astounding what medical professionals can do with surgery on the eye. Around 2002, I had LASIK surgery on my right eye and then around 2008, I had surgery again on my right eye to remove a little squiggly line called a pterygium. In Philip Johnson and Michael Behe's book, Darwin on Trial, they address a phenomenon called irreducible complexity. Behe points to structures like the human eye that he asserts make macro-evolution impossible. He argues that the eye could not have evolved over any amount of time because, after all, what is the value of a partial eye? Thus, the eye must have been created all at once in order to function as it does.
I would like to share with you today about another type of vision: spiritual insight. My evangelism professor, Dr. Roy Fish, said Acts 20:20 is "the 20/20 vision text" in the Bible. What he meant was, if we follow Paul's example from this passage, we could impact many for the Gospel of Jesus. Paul tells the elders from the church at Ephesus that he held nothing back from them that was helpful. That is a powerful statement within itself. The Apostle Paul planted numerous churches, and he has given all pastors and church planters a wonderful model to emulate. He not only gave them great doctrine to live by, but he also made sure they were able to receive the teaching by going to their corporate gatherings and even to their very homes.
Our son, Leighton, sent me a text a couple of weeks back that said our city of Austin, Texas, is not only one of the fastest growing cities in the USA, but it is also one of the fastest growing cities in the whole world. A friend of mine asked what we should do: "How do we help reach such masses of people?" I responded that the best way to do it is to plant new churches. I am looking forward to planting more churches in the greater Austin area.
How well are you seeing things from a spiritual vantage point? Are you passionate to help reach many who are walking in darkness? Let us share the good news of Jesus with someone today and help bring the glorious light of the Gospel to them!
