Fix Your Thoughts: God's Word

Since I am on sabbatical, for a few weeks, we are featuring devotions from a few guest writers. This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Junior High Pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church.
"The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever."

(Isaiah 40:8, ESV)

As kids, my brother and sister and I had chores to do. They were not hard, tedious, or painstaking, but they were a bit annoying and time-consuming. As adolescents, we three Forshee siblings were prone to complain about these lovely chores that our parents so "graciously" assigned to us. When we would complain, my sweet mom would sing this little jingle that I still hear to this day: "Do everything without complaining; do everything without arguing."

Now, I do not know where that jingle originated, but I honestly think I will never be able to forget it. Quite truthfully, I will probably use that jingle on my own kids one day! As I reflected on that jingle, I came to find out that it was actually just scripture put to a tune. Philippians 2:14 was the source of the lyrics to which my mom put notes and rhythm, embedding that song into my brain for eternity!

The point of this devo is not for you to learn a handy new comeback for when kids complain, but to learn a deeper lesson. When my mom heard us complain, she would give us scripture, and scripture is always a perspective-changer! Keeping in line with what we talked about yesterday about wanting to fix our thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise, Scripture fits every single one of these parameters!

Isaiah 40:8 is the verse that is at the top of today's devo. If you skipped over it, go back and read it. Upon reading it, recognize the truth that God's Word stands forever. The truths and life applications found in the 66 books of the Bible will stand forever. They can be trusted. They can be memorized. They can be applied. They can even be set to jingles!

What if your thought life was FLOODED with Scripture, and that was what you were constantly fixing your thoughts upon? These truths will last forever! I heard someone very wise tell me once that whenever you are going through a struggle or tough circumstance in life, find a Scripture passage to help you get through it! What hardship or tough life experience are you going through right now? What is your thought process towards it? Are you dwelling on your circumstances, which will always be changing? ...or are you dwelling on the unchanging eternal truths found in the Word of God?

I encourage you to FIX YOUR THOUGHTS on God's Word and what His word says about your situation. Find a verse that brings you comfort and joy through tough times. Find a verse that helps you praise God when you are going through great times! Let us be children of God who are constantly fixing our thoughts on the truth of God, His Word that will stand forever.
