"This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast,
and which enters the Presence behind the veil."
(Hebrews 6:19)
Each day this week for our devotions, I will give you one word to focus on for that day. For example, today's key word is hope. I am praying for you who read this that today the Holy Spirit will bring this word to your mind at the precise time that you need it.
I have a simple definition for Christian hope: Hope is the confident assurance that God will work everything out. It is not a wishful "I hope so" kind of mentality. Rather, it is a confidence in God that He loves me, has my best interests at heart, and knows much better than I what I truly need. I was having breakfast with my friend Felix the other day, and he said, "When God is in control, then all the pressure is on Him." That is true, and guess what? God can handle the pressure much better than we can!
The writer of our biblical text today describes the Christian's hope as an anchor of the soul. Anchors are strong and steady and not easily moved. A boat anchor, for example, keeps the boat in place, even if the wind and current seek to move it. Speaking of anchors, I discovered that the largest boat in the world is called the Triple E, a container ship that is over 1,300 feet long, over 190 feet wide, and get this: each link in the ship's massive anchor chain weighs 500 pounds! The Triple E can transport 9,000 containers full of various materials.
