Promtastic

Promtastic

It was so incredible to get a glimpse of Heaven in the middle of an event I helped with last week. I want to share my experience with you today.

Promtastic

This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Lead Student Pastor for Cross Church, Springdale, AR campus.
- Pastor Danny
"For we do not have an enduring city here; instead, we seek the one to come. Therefore, through him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name."

(Hebrews 13:14-15, CSB)

Well, it is the start of a new week, but I want to take you back to Friday real quick! This past Friday, Cross Church put on their annual "Promtastic" event. Promtastic is a prom experience for individuals with special needs. This was my second year to volunteer at it, and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite nights of the year! It is joyful and fun, and I always leave so encouraged! One of the major parts of the fun is that the student ministry team is in charge of the karaoke rooms!

Now, karaoke may not be your thing, but at Promtastic, it is THE thing! Of course there are many requests for "Let it Go", "We Don't Talk About Bruno", and some other classic Disney songs, as well as other classic karaoke songs; however, this year there was another song that was requested a few times: "I Can Only Imagine".

Here is a reminder of some of the lyrics:

Surrounded by Your glory,
What will my heart feel?
Will I dance for You Jesus,
Or in awe of You be still?
Will I stand in Your presence,
Or to my knees, will I fall?
Will I sing hallelujah?
Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine.

Now, the Promtastic karaoke room is not the most worshipful environment you have ever been in, but when this song came on, it got me to think about what it must be like for God to look down from Heaven at Promtastic and see His children singing these songs. It was so incredible to get a glimpse of Heaven in the middle of Promtastic. This young man who has special needs took the moment to praise His God in the middle of all that was going on. It was very touching and moving for all in the room.

This moment reminded me of Hebrews 13:14-15. It says that "we do not have an enduring city here; instead, we seek the one to come." The writer of Hebrews wants us to look towards Heaven. The author wants us to imagine and seek the city to come and not be so focused on this one here and now. A way that we do that is to "continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise". So today, look towards Heaven, and think about the city to come. As you do, offer up to God a sacrifice of praise.

May we all learn from the young men and women who chose to sing "I Can Only Imagine" on a karaoke night at an awesome Promtastic event.
