"The one who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy."
(Proverbs 28:13, CSB)
If you didn't know, the Forshees who live in Arkansas (Kendall and I) have two boys: Tabor and Miller. Tabor just turned two, and Miller is going to turn one in November. Needless to say, it is a wild time at the Forshee house. With Tabor, I can confidently say that we have hit the terrible twos. Tabor is learning so many words and sentences and also learning to express his wants to Kyndall and myself. He is cute, he is smart, and he is a punk when he doesn't get his way. So, I'll reiterate: it is a wild time right now at the Forshee house.
I share this with you because another one of the things that Tabor has been doing when he doesn't get his way (although, fortunately, more rarely) is hitting Miller, Kyndall, or me. Now, this is obviously not okay, and Kyndall and I discipline him accordingly, which includes him apologizing to whoever he has hit. He usually just says, "I'm sorry, mommy/daddy/Miller." This simple apology is very well received, and then he goes on about his day. As this happens, it really got me thinking about my own life: what is my reaction to the sin in my life?
I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the blood of Jesus saves me, but what is my heart's attitude and my mouth's response to the sin in my life? Am I confessing sin? Am I appalled by my sin? Am I having the same attitude that Jesus has toward sin? With Tabor's sweet and innocent apology, it really got me thinking that sometimes, and on some days, I am okay with the sin in my life because it wasn't a "big one" or it wasn't a "big deal." No; instead, I want to be a follower of Jesus who lives out Proverbs 28:13. I want to be a follower of Jesus who hates sin, confesses sin, and leaves sin behind. I want to be a follower of Jesus, confessing and renouncing my sins, and finding the mercy that God offers.
What about you? What is your relationship with the sin in your life?
Are you "hiding" it? Are you trying to cover it up?
Are you having a lackadaisical attitude toward it?
Today, ask for a special conviction of the Holy Spirit to reveal the sin in your life, and take aggressive action against it. Bring that sin to the light! Bring that sin up and confess and renounce it.
Let's be Christians who are not okay with sin, but deal with it aggressively by confessing and renouncing it!
