"Through the LORD'S mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness."
(Lamentations 2:22-23)
Last week, my son-in-law Jeffrey sent a text message to some of the men who serve as pastors in our church. He wrote:
"I have been wrestling with this thought a lot lately, so I thought I'd share. Hopefully it encourages you guys. Praying for y'all right now! The reason that we worry so much about tomorrow is that God hasn't given us tomorrow's mercies yet. He has, however, given us new mercy for today. And yet, when tomorrow arrives, new mercy will be waiting on us."
When I read his text, I thought of Micah Tyler's song, "New Today". You can listen to it here.
That is a good word. We should not worry, because God will give us the mercy and strength we need when the time comes. Jesus said in Matthew 6:34, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."
Jesus never worried. To worry is a sin, and Jesus never sinned, so we can accurately say He lived a worry-free life. How did He do it? He stayed in close communion with His Heavenly Father.
Perhaps you are worried about something, and you can't break free from the shackles of worry, which leads to fear and desperation. Jesus can help you. Look at the way He lived His life. He was constantly in communion, or prayer, with the Father. Have you noticed that you cannot pray and worry at the same time? Neither can we have courage and fear in our hearts simultaneously. One will dominate the other.
Jesus instructed us in the Sermon on the Mount that we are not to worry. When we are tempted to worry and try and figure things out on our own, it is good to remember the remedy Jesus gave us. He stated these wonderful words within the context of us not worrying. He said, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."
What is troubling your soul today? What is it that you are so worried about? Whatever it is, a couple of things can be said: First, it matters to you. No doubt, this is a serious issue, and you are looking for answers and peace. Secondly, God knows, and He will come through for you in His perfect timing. Have you noticed that God is never early or late; He is always perfectly on time!

Pastor, Farmer, D1 Football Player: My Friend, Dr. Marty Jacumin
I first met Marty around 1997 when I was teaching at Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. Marty was a student at the time, and I asked him to be my teaching assistant and grader. He did a great job. Marty went on to pastor Bay Leaf Baptist Church, and now he works for the North American Mission Board as well and serves as an interim pastor in North Carolina... and he is also a farmer! Tune in for a fascinating life story and great practical tips about finishing strong in ministry and in your walk with Christ.
