Higher Investments

Higher Investments

More important than making wise financial investments is investing our time & energy in blessing others, growing our friendships, & sharpening each other in our Christian walk.

Higher Investments

"And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."

(2 Timothy 2:2)

A couple of weeks back, I had the privilege to speak at a men's ministry event at the Worship Place: the Campus at Rocky Hollow, located in Georgetown, TX, about a 15-minute drive from my home. My friend Barry Tripp invited me to come and speak to the men. Here is a picture of Barry and me:
Let me explain the peanuts: Barry said he found out that I did not have a set speaker's fee and left that up to the group hosting me. He said I would come and speak for peanuts, and that is what they gave me! We all had a good laugh. (Yes, they did give me some peanuts, a hat, and an honorarium).

If you look at the screen in the picture, you will see the last point in my message to the men: Allow others to invest in you, and you invest in others. I like the word investment. My first thought when I hear that word is to think financially, like making a good monetary investment, or purchasing a good stock, or saving money for the future. But a better definition of this word is the giving of one's time and energy to another in order to bless them. All of us have had people invest in us: parents, teachers, pastors, etc.

Paul invested in Timothy, whom he calls his son. These men had a very tight bond and close-knit relationship. Paul led Timothy to Christ and discipled him. Timothy went on to do great things for God, like pastoring the church at Ephesus. The Greek word translated "commit" in our biblical text for today is paratithemi, which means to commit or entrust and can even mean to deposit. I like this idea of depositing or investing. The best deposit or investment you and I can make has nothing to do with money. Our best investments come when we pour the truth of Jesus into another person's life, like Paul did for Timothy and then Timothy did for other men in the church he served.

Making good financial investments is wise. It is prudent to do as Solomon stated in Proverbs 27:23-24:

"Be diligent to know the state of your flocks,
And attend to your herds;
For riches are not forever,
Nor does a crown endure to all generations."

Interestingly, my friend Barry is a financial planner. He is very knowledgeable of all things related to financial investments for the future. But as important as it is to make prudent financial investments, it is much more important to make spiritual investments in others.

Is someone investing in you? Are you investing in another?

In this fifth part of his series on the Apostle Paul's letter to Titus and its application to us today (especially to men), Pastor Danny discusses what it means to live our lives in submission to God's authority and how that allows us to overcome temptation and sin and be active agents of good for God's Kingdom.
