A Meal From Heaven

A Meal From Heaven

Sometimes it is harder to trust God in the little things than the big things. I trust Him for my salvation, but do I trust Him with my daily needs?

A Meal From Heaven

This week's devotions are written by my friend Jessica Hermann, former director of our college ministry at Great Hills Baptist Church.

What is your favorite food? For me, there is nothing like a warm bowl of macaroni and cheese–a dish which sadly is not popular in Germany but which I love to introduce to friends when they join us for a meal. Inviting people over to eat some American-style food is a great way to build community here; whether I make macaroni and cheese, Tex-mex, or a full Thanksgiving feast, gathering around food is a great excuse to bring people together. There are some famous meals in the Bible as well. This week, we will look at some of these famous biblical meals and see what God might teach us through them.

In Exodus 16, we find the Israelites freshly free from the grips of Egyptian slavery and now in the wilderness–free but still learning how to trust God in this new chapter. Though God had just parted the Red Sea and miraculously rescued His people, Israel still grumbles and doubts, even wishing they had never left Egypt, because though they suffered greatly under Pharaoh's hand, at least they had food. Silly, I know, but in their weakness, that is how they felt. Yet even in their grumbling and mistrust, the Lord provided.

"Then the Lord said to Moses, 'I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.'" (Exodus 16:4)

Each day, the Lord provided anew just what the people needed, and it was tasty! "It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey." (Exodus 16:31b) Why, though, did the Lord provide for them each morning and instruct them to only gather what they needed for each day? Why couldn't they gather enough for a few days and just store the extra? The Lord was teaching them. He was teaching them to trust Him that every morning He would still be there. He would still provide. He was showing them that He alone is enough for them each and every day.

Sometimes it is harder to trust God in the little things than the big things. I trust Him for my salvation, but do I trust Him with my daily needs? Or do I look elsewhere for the things I perceive to need?

He who is enough for our salvation is likewise more than capable to care for our daily needs. Perhaps we too need a reminder each morning to trust the Lord for the day ahead. Becoming a mom has certainly taught me to trust the Lord on a deeper level. I encourage you to start each morning declaring something like, "Lord, you are enough for me today. Thank you that I can trust you with all that this day holds. Help me to trust you in whatever may come that my faith may increase and you may be glorified. Amen."
