"Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling,
And to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy."
(Jude 24)
God is able! I love this wonderful truth written many times in the Bible. God is capable, powerful, and more than able to help us in every way. Jude 24 should give all followers of Jesus much peace and confidence. God is committed to keep us from stumbling. The perseverance of the saints is a wonderful biblical doctrine and one of the stalwart pillars of the Baptist faith. Charles Spurgeon said he preached this doctrine more than any other. The Baptist Faith and Message 2000 Article V on "God's Purpose of Grace" states: "All true believers endure to the end. Those whom God has accepted in Christ, and sanctified by His Spirit, will never fall away from the state of grace, but shall persevere to the end. Believers may fall into sin through neglect and temptation, whereby they grieve the Spirit, impair their graces and comforts, and bring reproach on the cause of Christ and temporal judgments on themselves; yet they shall be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation."
"God has power to keep us from stumbling. 'Protect' has the idea of 'guard' or 'preserve'. Yes, we are to keep ourselves in the sphere of God's love (verse 21), but our Lord keeps us from 'stumbling' or falling. The Greek philosopher Xenophon used the word for a sure-footed horse who does not stumble, and the Stoic Epictetus used it to speak of a good man who does not lapse morally." (Source: Ibid.)
God is also able to present us, His people, faultless before His presence. Note also that He wants us to be filled with joy when we see Jesus, not limping toward Him, weighed down with the sins of this world, but rather running free in the Spirit into His embrace. God will guarantee that we appear before Him and His glory without blemish because He sees His Son Jesus in us who has cleansed us of all sin, and we stand in Him complete!
God always does His part, but not our part. He is able. God is able (dynamai) to keep us from stumbling and present us faultless before Him with joy. Praise God! I do not want to stumble in my walk with Jesus. I want to run well and serve God faithfully and not be encumbered by sin. God is able to help me, and He is very able to help you as well.
