A Most Glorious Meal

This week's devotions are written by my friend Jessica Hermann, former director of our college ministry at Great Hills Baptist Church.

Happy Friday! This week we have been reading about different meals in the Bible, and we have a most glorious one to feast on today. In Revelation 19, John writes about the marriage supper of the Lamb:

"Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: 'Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.' (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God's holy people.) Then the angel said to me, 'Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!' And he added, 'These are the true words of God.'" (Revelation 19:6-9)

This picture of the wedding feast in Revelation 19 is built on the marriage traditions of Jewish culture in the time of Christ. First, an agreement is made, often between the parents, and a dowry is paid. Then, much later, the bridegroom comes for the bride at her house and takes her to the wedding feast. Now, in this story, the bride is the Church and Christ is the groom. He paid the "dowry" with His blood on the cross, and now the Church awaits his second coming. One day, when He comes, we will be invited to the wedding feast where all saints–those of the Old Testament times and the Church following the first coming of Christ–will celebrate together. This is a glorious meal! It is certainly one we can look forward to.

One of the best parts of this meal is the size of the table. I love a full dinner table. I love to host others and the joy and laughter and community that takes place around a full table. Now imagine a table so long you can't even see all the people sitting on the other end. Not only that, but the Lord is adding places to the table day by day in preparation. Every time someone puts their faith in Christ, another place at this table is needed.

The dinner served at my wedding was Chuy's Tex-Mex. (Can I get an amen from those who know?!) My husband and I love Chuy's and always go there as soon as we land in Texas when we come to visit. Yet I can't even imagine how amazing this wedding feast will be. I can't wait to dine at this wedding feast one day! It is not the food that I look forward to most–it is seeing the glory of the Lord Jesus and being clothed in righteousness by God's grace!

Let us rejoice today that though we were once enemies, Christ has made a space for us at His table. As you look at your life today, are you hit with more cause for joy or more cause for worry? If worry or despair dominates your mind, let this promised meal be something you can look forward to with great anticipation and hope.
