"And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide."
(Genesis 22:14)
Genesis 22 reaches its great turning point when Abraham looks up and sees a ram caught in a thicket. God has provided a substitute for Isaac.
Abraham names the place Jehovah Jireh — "The LORD Will Provide."
The word jireh carries the idea of provision. God saw beforehand what Abraham would need, and God provided for that need at exactly the right time. Abraham could not see the provision while he was climbing the mountain. He had to trust God before he could see what God had prepared. There is a beautiful picture in that truth: while we are walking up one side of the mountain carrying our burden in prayer, God is already walking up the other side with His provision.
Ted and Dorothy Hustead were special people. They were the family behind Wall Drug in South Dakota. In 1931, Ted and Dorothy purchased a drugstore in the small town of Wall. Others thought the place was practically forsaken. For five years, business was terrible. They were close to giving up.
Then Dorothy asked what weary travelers passing through the area needed most. Her answer was simple: ice-cold water. Ted and a young man put up signs along the highway advertising free ice water. Travelers began stopping at the store for water, and many also bought ice cream and other items. The business changed dramatically. Eventually, Wall Drug became a famous roadside destination. Ted later said the experience taught him a great lesson: there is no place on earth that is truly forsaken, because wherever you are, you can reach out to people with something they need.
God's provision does not always come in the form we expect. Sometimes He provides by changing our circumstances. Sometimes He provides through another person. Sometimes He provides an opportunity hidden inside a difficulty. Sometimes He provides strength rather than removing the trial.
The ultimate picture of Jehovah Jireh points us to Jesus. Mount Moriah became associated with the temple in Jerusalem, and centuries later, in that same mountain region, Jesus—the Lamb of God—gave Himself for the sins of the world. What God prevented Abraham from doing with Isaac, God Himself did in giving His Son for us.
God saw our greatest need before we ever recognized it, and He provided Christ.
So whatever burden you carry today, bring it to Jehovah Jireh. Perhaps you need provision in your family, finances, work, future, or some other area of life. You may not see the answer yet. But you can trust the God who sees beforehand.
Prayer: Jehovah Jireh, You know my needs before I bring them to You. Help me trust Your timing and Your wisdom. Thank You most of all for providing Jesus, the Lamb who gave Himself for me. Teach me to walk by faith until I see Your provision. Amen.
