"God called to him from within the bush, 'Moses! Moses!' And Moses said, 'Here I am.'"
(Exodus 3:4)
As we have been discussing for the past couple weeks, the Hebrew word hineni means "Here I am," but it communicates much more than simply being present. It expresses readiness, availability, attentiveness, and a willingness to respond when God calls. Throughout Scripture, people such as Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, and Isaiah responded to God with this posture of heart.
Moses was going about an ordinary day when God interrupted his routine with something extraordinary. He was tending sheep when he saw a bush burning without being consumed. Moses stopped, looked more closely, and then heard God call his name: "Moses! Moses!" His immediate response was, "Here I am."
What a beautiful response. Moses was paying attention. He was willing to stop what he was doing and listen to God.
But God was about to ask something of Moses that was far greater than Moses could imagine. God intended to use him to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage. Moses was not looking for a leadership position. He was not preparing himself to confront Pharaoh. He was simply tending sheep. Yet God had an assignment for him.
Sometimes God calls us in the middle of ordinary life. We may be caring for family, working a job, serving at church, raising children, helping a neighbor, or simply going about our daily routines. Then God places something in front of us that requires our attention.
The important question is not, "Am I qualified?" The first question is, "Am I listening?" A hineni heart says, "Lord, here I am. I am listening. I am available. Show me what You want me to do."
We are living through seasons of change, and change can require flexibility and willingness. The circumstances around us may change, but God has not changed. He still calls His people to listen, trust, and respond.
Today, ask yourself: Where is God calling me to pay attention? What is He asking me to see that I have been overlooking? Is my heart genuinely available to Him?
You may not know what God will ask before you say yes. Moses certainly didn't. But obedience begins with listening.
Prayer: Lord, here I am. Help me to become more attentive to Your voice and more willing to respond when You call. Give me a heart that is available to You. Help me not to be so busy with ordinary things that I miss the extraordinary things You want to do. Today I say hineni—here I am. Use me however You desire. Amen.
