When You Want to Quit

When You Want to Quit

Sometimes the difficulty of an assignment makes us question whether we heard God correctly. But difficult does not necessarily mean wrong.

When You Want to Quit

"But Moses again pleaded, 'Lord, please! Send anyone else.'"

(Exodus 4:13)

There is a big difference between saying, "Here I am," and saying, "Send someone else."

Moses experienced both.

When God first called him, Moses responded, hineni. But as Moses began to understand the magnitude of God's assignment, fear and resistance grew. He questioned who he was, what he should say, whether people would believe him, and whether he was capable of speaking effectively. Finally, Moses reached the point of desperation: "Lord, please! Send anyone else."

Have you ever been there? You said yes to God, but somewhere along the way, the assignment became harder than you expected. The excitement disappeared. The obstacles multiplied. The work became exhausting. You began wondering why God ever called you to this in the first place. Perhaps you have prayed, "Lord, surely there is someone else who could do this."

The important question is: Has God changed His mind? Moses had changed his mind, but God had not changed His. Sometimes the difficulty of an assignment makes us question whether we heard God correctly. But difficult does not necessarily mean wrong. In fact, some of the assignments God gives us become difficult precisely because they require us to depend upon Him.

Esther faced a similar moment. Her people were in danger of destruction, and she had to decide whether she would protect herself or risk approaching the king on their behalf. She was desperate, afraid, and faced a difficult choice. Yet she moved forward in faith.

There will be moments when obedience is costly. There will be moments when quitting seems easier. But faithfulness means continuing to walk with God even when the road is difficult.

Maybe your assignment today is not dramatic. Perhaps it is caring for someone who depends upon you. Perhaps it is forgiving someone who hurt you. Perhaps it is continuing in a ministry that has become tiring. Perhaps it is doing the right thing when no one notices. Whatever it is, don't confuse difficulty with God's absence.

God was not absent from Moses when Moses wanted to quit. God was still there. And He is still with you.

Prayer: Lord, there are times when I am tired and want to quit. Give me wisdom to know the difference between Your leading and my discouragement. When the road becomes difficult, remind me that You have not abandoned me. Give me endurance to continue when You have called me to continue. Help me trust You one step at a time. Amen.
