CIRCUMSTANCES: Switching Banks

CIRCUMSTANCES: Switching Banks

This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Lead Student Pastor for Cross Church, Springdale, AR campus.

"There is profit in all hard work, but endless talk leads only to poverty."

(Proverbs 14:23, CSB)

Kyndall and I have lived in Northwest Arkansas (NWA) for over three years now, and we absolutely love it! We moved from the North Dallas area, and we love calling NWA home! In those three years, we have adopted one son, Kyndall gave birth to our second son, and we are a couple of months away from having our third kid! We have great roots here in NWA, and we hope that the Lord will have us here for a long time. With roots taking hold, kids in the area, and a home we hope to stay in for a while, we still had one thing left from Texas that we needed to change: our bank.

We loved our Texas bank, but after three years, we decided it was time to switch. In the Forshee household, I handle the money stuff, but for this, Kyndall and I decided to tag-team it. We went to a coffee shop, spent a couple of hours, and switched everything from our old bank to our new one. We had to update subscriptions; we had to cancel some things; we had to make some phone calls. All in all, it wasn't really fun and left me a little frustrated. We left the coffee shop, and I thought our bank-switching excursion was over. I was wrong. A few days later, we had a few conversations, a few signed documents, and a few phone calls with some time on hold, and after all that, we finally had it all switched over.

Why am I sharing about our bank-switching situation with you? If Proverbs 14:23 is true, I can take comfort and joy in not wasting a Friday, and a few other days, battling banks to get a new one. I can take comfort and joy in knowing that, in Christ, I can even choose to make switching banks beneficial for my walk with Jesus. I know my hard work was not in vain, and that all hard work has profit!

This isn't a major marker in my spiritual journey, but I look back and am glad God could use bank-switching to help me fall even more in love with Him! How did I grow in my faith through this circumstance? I honestly was getting pretty frustrated with the process. I let the frustration affect how I talked to and interacted with Kyndall, and it affected my mood while I was driving. It finally got me to ask myself, am I really letting a bank switch affect me this much? I then asked how I could make this circumstance beneficial for my relationship with Jesus rather than just frustrating. It made me think that anything and everything, work-wise, can be used for God's glory, and that all hard work can be beneficial with God. This realization changed my outlook for the day. It changed how I spoke with and interacted with my wife. It honestly made my Friday so much better because I chose to let faith inform my circumstances rather than my circumstances inform my emotions and my attitude!

My encouragement to you today is this: God can use any hard work that He has planned for you today! You just need a proper, biblical perspective to believe and know that God can use even the most mundane and silly things for His glory—even something like changing banks!
