"So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."
(Colossians 3:1-2, CSB)
I have to confess, I am not proud that I am writing this devotional. I wish this were not an issue for me. I will say at the beginning, I have gotten much better at this than when I was younger. The circumstance that I am going to talk to you about is Auburn Football games. I am sure that by the time that these devos come out, my heart will have taken both some more great moments and some more heartbreak from my beloved Tigers. On Saturdays, I really enjoy watching Auburn football! I get nervous before the game. I get my two boys fired up for the game. I get everyone in the family screaming, "War Eagle!" Saturdays are a fun time in the Forshee household.
Here is why I am writing about this circumstance: sometimes the game affects me too much. I get so wrapped up in the game that I passionately ask questions at the TV. I get so wrapped up in the game that I question some of the coaches' sanity. I just get wrapped up in it all! I think it really came to a head when one game I yelled out, "OH MY GOSH!" Now, this isn't a horrible word in the grand scheme of things, but what really got my attention was my three-year-old screaming it right after I did. This got me to think: am I really letting a football game control my emotions and how I communicate with my family? That is when I started to take inventory of how I'm letting the game affect me.
The verse I use for moments of heart-check and even moments of temptation is Colossians 3:1-2. I love this verse because it clearly tells us what to do as followers of Jesus: Seek and Set! Seek the things above and set our minds on the things above. I have found that I don't really care as much about a football game when I seek and set. I have found that I am not as short or impatient at the TV when I seek and set. I have found that I can handle the ups and downs of a football game way better when I seek and set!
What about you? Do you have a circumstance of which you are not proud that makes you irritable, too emotional, or so passionate that you shout? My encouragement to you is to cling to Colossians 3:1-2! Seek and Set! What I have found is that when I seek and set, I realize the triviality of whatever has been overtaking my mind—in my case, a football game—and I then get into a much better headspace to keep watching the game or to move forward with my day.
