My Aching Back!

My Aching Back!

"I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well."

(Psalm 139:14)

This week in our devotions I am excited to write about the importance of good physical health from a Christian perspective. After learning that, perhaps you are thinking you might skip over this week's devotions from DFEA, but I encourage you to keep reading. These messages are very grace based and are written from the standpoint of encouragement and motivation, not judgment.

Personally, I have been struggling with some physical ailments. On July 19 of last year, I was in the gym working on my frozen right shoulder (still having issues with it after 10 months), and I leaned over, and my back was not happy. I did not think too much of it and went ahead with the rest of my day, which included preaching for 45 minutes in Dallas, TX, and then boarding a 3-hour flight to Anaheim, CA. It did not end well for me, as I had to go to an ER in Irvine, CA, to get pain meds. I spent the rest of the week mostly riding around on a scooter while on our vacation with family and friends.

Fast forward to today and my back is not better; actually, it has gotten worse. Now, I did a couple of things that were not too smart, and it cost me. One of the things about focusing on being in good health is learning about our bodies, what we can do, and what our limitations are. Around Christmas, I forgot about my back when I picked up a tree limb and tried to move it away from an entrance to our church property. As soon as I turned to walk with the limb, I knew that was not a good idea! But with good treatments from my chiropractor, Dr. Bob Meyers, I was able to get back to good health—that is, until I made another, bigger mistake.

A few weeks back, it got very cold in our part of the world. It was around 20 degrees Fahrenheit. I went to put gas in my wife's car, and while driving it, I noticed all four tires were very low in air pressure. So, being a good husband, I proceeded to put air in those deflated tires. Huge mistake. It was freezing cold, and I leaned over for a good 10 minutes filling the tires with air. When I got home a few minutes later, I knew I had injured my back yet again. Since that time, I have been in pain. On March 2, I am getting an MRI on my lower back. I am pretty sure it is a disk issue, because the pain runs down my backside all the way to my calf muscle. Sciatica pain is no joke!

David said in Psalm 139 that God has created us, and we are fearfully and wonderfully made. I love that. God has given us these physical bodies, and we should do all that we can to maintain them well. Dr. Bob likes to tell me that our physical bodies are self-healing organisms. It is true. God designed us in such a way that over time, our bodies heal in remarkable fashion. I am ready for that back healing now. But God is so good, and He is teaching me much about slowing down.

More tomorrow on physical health.
