Covenant Marriage

Covenant Marriage

I will focus this week on what covenant marriage looks like. Last month, my wife Ashley and I taught a marriage retreat for the couples of the FBC Sherman, TX.

Covenant Marriage

"And He answered and said to them, 'Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."

(Matthew 19:4-6)

Last month, my wife Ashley and I taught a marriage enrichment retreat for the couples of the FBC Sherman, TX, at Willowood Ranch. We enjoyed meeting these couples along with their staff. They recently hired a new pastor, Hunter Smith, and it was good to meet him and his family. The leadership of the church asked if Ashley and I could talk about covenant marriage and covenant churchmanship. Since I wrote recently about church, I will focus this week on what a covenant marriage looks like.

I seem to write and talk about marriage and family a lot. I am grateful for the opportunities that God has given to Ashley and me to share with others on this grand topic of marriage. Many marriages are undoubtedly struggling and hanging on by a thread. That is not God's will for His first created institution! He desires for husbands and wives to love each other, serve one another, and be committed for life.

Ashley and I will celebrate 40 years of marriage on August 2. God has been so very kind and gracious to us and our family, and we are most grateful. She is the best person I have ever met, and I just happen to be married to her. Jesus said in heaven there is no marriage, for we will be like the angels in heaven. (In Matthew 22:30, Jesus says, "For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.") I believe that I will know in heaven that while on earth I was married to Ashley. When I get to heaven, I am going to find her and say hello, not because we will be married, but because I know she loves Jesus and will be thrilled, like me, to be in heaven!
