"And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'"
(Matthew 25:40)
This week in our devotions, we will discuss the topic of going on mission with Christ after the lost. What a joy it is to share the Good News with everyone, whether they are our family, friends, neighbors, or those in other parts of the world. Last week, I was supposed to be in the Dominican Republic (the DR) with a team from the USA on mission with Samaritan's Purse. The plan was to see the work going on firsthand and give some of the shoebox gifts to the children, as part of Operation Christmas Child. I was excited to go and had been looking forward to the trip.
However, on Monday morning of last week, after getting to the airport to fly to Miami and then on to the DR, I was informed that my flight had been canceled! My flight was one of 24,000 flights canceled or changed on that day. Nearly half of those who had planned to go to the DR on this trip were, like me, unable to make it. But the half that went had an amazing time in the DR with those precious children.
Many of those who will be receiving the shoeboxes with toys and other gifts are considered by the world as the least of these. Many children across our globe suffer greatly from poverty. But our Lord takes special notice of these dear ones. Jesus went so far as to say that the way you treat them is how you are treating Him! I am grateful for our church, Great Hills Baptist Church, in Austin, TX. We have been partners with Samaritan's Purse for over 20 years. I was invited to go on this trip because I serve as the pastor of GHBC.
Going on short-term mission trips is a great way to do our part in obeying the Great Commission. Not everyone can go due to poor health. But they can support those who do go with prayer and finances. I made a commitment to the Lord in 1998, after my trip to Cambodia, to go every year on an overseas trip. I think the only years I missed were the Covid years.
Oftentimes the Lord sends me to South Asia where our teams meet many of whom the world would say are the least. They are very poor, but they are people created in the image of God and deserve to hear the greatest news in the world: the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
I encourage you to partner with a short team mission group, go, and serve! If you cannot go physically, then please consider praying for and supporting financially those who go.
