"Then He said to them, 'Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.'"
(Matthew 4:19)
This week, we are discussing the topics of missions and evangelism. To be on mission with Jesus is a great privilege and responsibility for every follower of Christ. We are at our best when we are looking outward, praying for opportunities to go and share, and then moving forward in obedience to share.
During my message at church a couple of weeks ago, I asked for a group of about five volunteers to walk up on the stage and form a huddle. While they all locked arms and looked only at each other, I shared with our church that we must avoid this mentality at all costs. Of course, there will be times of discipleship, small groups, and fellowships with other believers, but that should not deter us from going and telling the world about the Savior. Our discipleship should fuel our fervor for evangelism! Many churches are struggling, and they treat the struggle like families do. When a crisis hits a family or church, the tendency is to block others out and focus only on us. The problem with this action is that we neglect those who really need us.
Last week, we had a team of eleven college students and young adults from our church travel to Provo, Utah, to share the gospel with many. I went on this mission trip a couple of years ago, and it was such a blessing. Many Mormons are seeking and are deeply dissatisfied with their religion. Our team visited a Mormon Temple as well as shared Jesus at Utah State University, where Charlie Kirk was assassinated last year. They also went to BYU, but they were not allowed to evangelize on the property, so they stood outside the school and witnessed to students walking to class.
They partnered with Pastor Brendon Scoggin and FBC Provo. Brendon is a sharp young pastor serving Jesus in a difficult place. But they faithfully bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus, love the many Mormons that surround them, and are always seeking ways to lead them to the Jesus of the Bible.
Proverbs 11:30 says, "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise."
When you and I are properly following Jesus and emulating the way He lived, we will be used greatly by God to point people to the Savior. If we have a fishing problem, it is because we have a following problem. When Jesus is on our minds, He will come out of our mouths.
