"And said to Him, 'Do You hear what these are saying?' And Jesus said to them, 'Yes. Have you never read, 'Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise'?'"
(Matthew 21:16)
The title of the devotion today has nothing to do with the TV network ABC. Today, we are focusing on how simple the Gospel is and how easy it is to share it with others — so simple and easy that even a child can believe and obey it.
I was reminded of this truth recently when my son Leighton shared with me the following story. Leighton is the pastor of our north campus in Liberty Hill, TX. Soon we will change the name to Waypoint Church, Santa Rita. Mia is 8 years old, and she and her mom are very faithful attenders of our church. They shared with me Mia's decision to be baptized. I sat down with them both before the worship service began and shared with Mia how happy I am for her. I told her mom and Mia that Leighton would be sharing with her more. That next week, Leighton met with them to make sure Mia understood the Gospel and what baptism meant.
Leighton told me that she clearly understood the Gospel and had received Jesus in her heart a couple of months back. Mia, her mom, and her dad had attended one of our evangelism days in the community. On that day, it was pretty chilly, and Leighton wondered if anyone would come. But sure enough, people came, and we were able to bless our community and share Jesus with them. Mia told Leighton that day that a little girl came up to her and gave her a little Jesus figure as a gift. Mia was very touched by this 4-year-old who boldly approached her and gave her the Jesus figure. Later that night, Mia told her mom she wanted to have that kind of boldness for God that the little girl has. So, she gave her life to Christ. Praise God!
A neat thing about this little 4-year-old girl is that she is Leighton's oldest child, Isabella Grace Forshee, my sweet granddaughter! She is a bold little evangelist in her own way. We are so proud of her.
If we know enough about the Gospel to believe it, then we know enough about it to share it with others. Our problem is not knowledge. We know the Gospel, and we also know, as believers in Jesus, we are commanded to share the good news with everyone. Why do we not simply share Jesus with others? There are many reasons why, and most of them fall into the category of excuses.
Let me encourage you to share the ABCs of the Gospel with someone today: A stands for Admit you are a sinner (Romans 3:23); B stands for Believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and arose from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4); and C stands for Confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord (Romans 10:9). The Gospel is incredibly profound, and it is also very simple — so simple a child can believe. Will you share this wonderful news with someone today?
