"By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit."
(1 John 4:13)
We know we remain or abide in God because He has given us the Holy Spirit. The verb translated "has given" is in the perfect tense, meaning a past action with continuous results. Once a person responds to the Spirit's conviction and convincing and believes in Jesus for salvation, the Spirit comes to live inside him or her.
In 1 John 4:12-16, the Apostle John preached a powerful message about love to the churches he served as pastor or overseer. Love is clearly the predominant theme of verses 7-11. In verses 7-12, he mentions agape 15 times, and in verses 13-21, he mentions agape 14 times; therefore, he writes of love 29 times in only 15 verses. Keep in mind that John uses the word love much differently than the common conception or definition of love. For John, love meant sacrifice. Love was a sacrificial giving of oneself to God and others.
