The "heavens" (Hebrew word is
shamayin) is the same word used in
Genesis 1:1, and it means sky or the abode of the stars (BlueletterBible.org). The heavens "declare" (Hebrew word is
sawfar) means enumerate, inscribe, speak, and score a mark like a tally or record. When you gaze into the heavens and our universe and see the amazing beauty, precision, and design, you cannot help but score another mark of praise for the creator God.
But not everyone does. Stephen Hawking attributes everything to gravity. He states in his book,
The Grand Design, "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going." (
Source.)
But the same question needs to be asked of Hawking that was asked of Crick's aliens: What is the origin of gravity?
In our solar system, the planets revolve around the star we call the sun. Our planet Earth spins and simultaneously rotates around the sun in a football-shaped orbit. The earth rotates at the speed of 1,000 miles an hour, but if the speed were only slightly altered, then life would end on our planet. Heat would destroy us by day, and we would freeze at night. Earth is traveling at 64,800 miles an hour around the sun. If the rate slowed or sped up, then life could not exist, again, due to extreme hot or cold temperatures. The sun is 93 million miles away from the earth, and its surface temperature is 11,500 degrees Fahrenheit. But if the heat traveling from the sun would vary only 50 degrees, we would die of extreme heat or cold (Harber, p. 38-40). Evolutionists would have us believe that after the Big Bang, all of the universe just happened to fall or land in all the exact precise locations for life to exist on Earth. Most would agree that this is mathematically impossible. But those are our two options: 1. precision coming from random accidents and chaos, or 2. instead, someone (God) caused it all.
I have run out of time to finish up all I wanted to say about this wonderful doctrine of creation. Tune in next week as we wrap up this study.
Our God is the awesome God who created us, loves us, and desires to have a relationship with us. We humans are very distinct from all other life forms, like plants and even animals, and we are even more unlike inanimate objects, like rocks. We are not just "star stuff", as Carl Sagan and other materialists would have us believe. We have great worth and purpose because God made us. Do you know God? If not, I invite you to turn to Jesus in faith, repent of your sins, and invite Jesus into your life to be your Savior and Lord.
