"'To whom then will you liken Me,
Or to whom shall I be equal?' says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high,
And see who has created these things,
Who brings out their host by number;
He calls them all by name,
By the greatness of His might
And the strength of His power;
Not one is missing."
(Isaiah 40:25-26)
Let us pick up our theme from last week's devotions and further explore the doctrine of creation. What a blessing it is to know the One who loves us so much that He created us in His image, offers us forgiveness of sins through His Son Jesus, and promises to come again for us and take us home to live with Him in heaven for eternity. What an awesome God He is! Who is like the Lord our God, majestic in power and awesomeness? No one!
Let us probe outer space: The sun is one of 100 billion stars in our galaxy. The average distance between these stars is 30 trillion miles. To travel from our sun to another star on average, traveling at 17,000 miles an hour, would take you 201,450 years to reach it! And that is just the distance between two of the 100 billion stars in our galaxy; amazing! The Bible says God knows them all by name! (Psalm 147:4 states, "He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.")
God tells us to compare Him to the heavens. "Because God has no limits, and from our perspective, neither do the heavens." (Source: Geisler and Turek, I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist, 108-09). Yes, the heavens declare to us the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork, as David said in Psalm 19:1. Paul writes in Romans 1:20, "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse."
If one were to argue that Mount Rushmore is the work of gravity, wind, rain, time, and chance combination of the elements, I think Gutzon Borglum would take exception. I read a biography of his life a few years ago; he was a brilliant sculptor. Moreover, to assert that Washington's courage, Jefferson's genius, Lincoln's intellect, and Roosevelt's leadership all came about through mass mutation, natural selection, and macroevolution is indeed foolish. It makes much more sense and takes much less faith to simply acknowledge what is most clear and obvious: God created it all! Psalm 14:1 says, "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.'" Let us give God praise for His mighty power as seen in creation. There is no one like our God!
