"I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth."
(Psalm 139:14-15)
About ten years ago, I went to the Texas State Capitol in downtown Austin to show support for a pro-life bill being considered by lawmakers and politicians. A group of about 20 people from our church went with me to show their support for life as well. It was quite a scene around and in the Capitol. There were so many people that we had to go to another room that seated about 300. It was very crowded, and I noticed quickly it was almost full of those who were in opposition to the bill. So, those from our church were greatly outnumbered. It then became a pep rally among those in the room, but not for life–instead just the opposite. A senator was presiding over the assembly and asked if anyone would like to speak. My hand went up, and I thought to myself, "What in the world am I doing? What will I say before this assembly who totally disagrees with what I believe?"
I was a bit nervous as I walked to the stage. As soon as I opened my mouth to give a defense for what I believe, I was shouted down by the disrespectful crowd. The problem they had with me was, well, I am a man. Strange, I know. I will never forget what happened next: my wife Ashley and another member of our church, Cindy, both came and stood beside me in a show of support. When Ashley tried to speak, there was initially a desire to hear her because she was a woman and not a man. But soon one half the crowd began to shout in disagreement. The moderator came back to the stage and told everyone to go home. As I exited the stage, people came to the front to speak to Ashley, Cindy, and me. One young lady confessed she had no idea why she was even there. Another lady approached me, and I could tell she was ready to debate. She was as much pro-abortion as I am pro-life. When I quoted Psalm 139:14-15, she looked at me with a puzzled look on her face and asked, "Does the Bible really say that?" I said that it does indeed, and I opened the Bible and showed her. The truth of Scripture silenced her argument.
I love this biblical text that clearly tells us that our Creator God, as verse 15 says, made us, and we are skillfully wrought by God. What does this tell us? We are not accidents of evolution but the result of the Almighty God who created and loves us. Scripture teaches that God indeed created every person on the planet, and it is His desire to enter into a relationship with each one of us. 2 Peter 3:9 states that God is "not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."
You are uniquely created by God. No one on the planet has your genetic makeup. True, you may have a twin or doppelganger, but your DNA is different. Face it, there is no one like you: special, loved, and created by God to know and worship Him and enjoy life on earth and eternal life in heaven. That is God's desire for you and for me. Praise His name!
