"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
(Genesis 1:1, NLT)
When you hear the word "Miracles," what thoughts come to your mind?
- Maybe you think of a crazy, unexplainable thing you experienced or saw a loved one experience.
- Maybe you think of the birth of one of your children and recall those miraculous moments.
- Maybe you think of the moment that God took you from death to life.
- Maybe you think of some of the miracles recorded throughout scripture.
That is what I want to discuss this week: miracles. For this week, let's define miracles this way: a supernatural and unexplainable work of God. With this as our working definition, there are 250-350 recorded miracles throughout the Bible. The Bible records all kinds of miracles: miracles of power over nature, provision and supply, healing, deliverance and exorcism, protection, and resurrection. These are just a few of the miracles in scripture.
For this great Monday, I want to focus on the first recorded miracle in the Bible! In fact, it is found in the very first verse in the Bible: Genesis 1:1. That is right, God's word starts with a miracle! Out of nothing, God creates the heavens and the earth. God performs a supernatural, unexplainable work: He makes the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1 goes on to record God making so many more things and ends with God creating his "very good" creation: humankind. The first miracle we see God perform is creation!
When I think about the miracle of creation and the earth, my mind immediately goes to the beauty of creation and the season that we just had here in Northwest Arkansas (NWA). I used to live in this fantastic place called Texas where there are two seasons: hot and a little less hot. In other parts of the country, there are four seasons. We are just wrapping up fall right now, and I am loving it. I love fall in NWA because you get to see the leaves change, the colors come out, and a beautiful array of red, yellow, orange, green, and brown. It is breathtaking and makes me marvel at the beauty of God's creation. Here in NWA, we have had snow as well! Yes, we had a couple of snow mornings already (nothing crazy where it stuck or even made the news), and watching the snow fall was beautiful and made me marvel at God's first recorded miracle: the earth He created from nothing!
Today: take a moment to really take in the beauty of this miracle of a planet we get to live on.
- Maybe take a walk outside and see the sights around you.
- Maybe check when sunset is and find a good viewing spot.
- Maybe go through some old pictures from a recent vacation to a beautiful spot.
I don't know exactly what it may look like for you, but take some time to marvel at the supernatural and unexplainable work of God that is the earth. Marvel at the miracle of God's creation!
