"Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead…"
(1 Kings 17:1, NLT)
Elijah is a very popular figure in the Bible, and he experienced many miracles! If you are unfamiliar with the prophet Elijah, let me tell you a little about him. Elijah's ministry takes place in the Northern Kingdom after the nation of Israel has split in two, during the reign of King Ahab and his wife Jezebel. Elijah is the prophet who had the famous battle with the false prophets in 1 Kings 18, where fire came down from the heavens and burned up the sacrifice! (If you are unfamiliar with that story, head over to 1 Kings 18 and read it!) Elijah is mentioned throughout the Bible. Here are some chapters that talk about him:
1 Kings 17-19, 2 Kings 1-2, Malachi 4:5-6, Matthew 11, 16, 17, & 27, Mark 6, 9, & 15, Luke 1, 4, & 9, John 1, Romans 11, and James 5.
Clearly, this is an important messenger, prophet, and man of God because of the sheer amount of references to him in the Scriptures. What I want to focus on in Elijah's life is the miracles God performs through him and allows him to see during his lifetime. Here is a list of some of the miracles God performs in Elijah's life:
- Elijah announces a drought: 1 Kings 17:1
- Elijah announces the end of a drought: 1 Kings 18:41-45
- Elijah is fed by ravens: 1 Kings 17:2–6
- Elijah has flour and oil miracles: 1 Kings 17:8–16
- Elijah raises the widow's son from the dead: 1 Kings 17:17–24
- Elijah prays for fire from heaven on Mt. Carmel: 1 Kings 18:20–39
- Elijah outruns a chariot: 1 Kings 18:46
- An angel provides food for Elijah: 1 Kings 19:4–8
- Elijah experiences God's presence at Mt. Horeb: 1 Kings 19:9–18
- Elijah prays fire on soldiers... twice: 2 Kings 1:9–12
- Elijah parts the Jordan river: 2 Kings 2:7–8
Elijah experienced many miracles while he was on earth! I would encourage you to pick a couple from the list and read about the miracles God performed in Elijah's life. (The one I found most fascinating was the account in 2 Kings 1:9-12.) As you look at these miracles, you will find something exciting. Most of the miracles are Elijah walking in a relationship with God and obeying God. There was no promise of a miracle; it was just Elijah being obedient and having faith in a God of miracles.
That is a testimony that I want in my life. I want to be obedient to God and to what He asks me to do. Elijah's miracles came at the end of obedience and faithfulness, not Elijah banking on a miracle. We never know what miracle might be at the end of our obedience. We never know how God may want to use us in His miraculous plan, but what we can control is our obedience to what He calls us to do.
Today, what is God calling you to be obedient or faithful to do? What is one step of obedience that you can take? Here is the fantastic part: we are always guaranteed a miracle when we obey, because at the end of obedience, there is always closeness and relationship-building with the God of the universe, and that in itself is a miracle and all we need!
