Resting in God

Resting in God

We have so many things to do, many even for God. But He longs for moments where we rest in Him quietly.

Resting in God

This week's devotions are written by my friend, Becky Dean, our Missions Director at Great Hills Baptist Church.

My first baby turned one earlier this year, and over the last few months, we've definitely seen the shift from baby to toddler. It's a stage that's equally adorable and exasperating! Through it, God has been showing me many ways that Christians are like toddlers. If you're a parent or have been around small kids, my reflections will probably be nothing new, but I'm going to share a few thoughts this week. As our little one gets older, I have no doubt God will teach me even more!

Most people love baby snuggles. But once a baby is able to walk, busy toddlers rarely want to sit still and cuddle. My baby was never a fan of snuggling even as an infant and is less of one now that she can walk and would rather be roaming the house. When she does sit in my lap, she's often restless and squirming, searching for the next thing to do. But I look forward to the moments when she sits quietly with her head against me and rests.

This got me thinking about how much God must enjoy those moments where we stop being so busy and just sit in His presence and enjoy being close to Him. If we're honest, most of us would confess that many of our quiet times are more like my toddler's: we're always waiting for the next thing, distracted, wanting to move on, rather than just enjoying the presence of God. I admit that my baby gets the desire to be active from me! But God calls Himself a refuge and compares Himself to a mother bird sheltering her young.

In Psalm 61:4, David writes, "I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings."

And Psalm 91:4 says, "He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge."

How many times is our excuse for failing to rest that we're being busy for God rather than spending time with him? We have so many things to do, many even for Him. But He longs for moments where we rest in Him quietly. And we need those moments too, before we can do anything of substance for Him and to refresh our hearts and souls.

When was the last time you took a moment to rest and remain in God?
