All week we have considered the theme "Christ at the center", and today we will wrap it up by considering what it means to have Christ at the center of our future. No matter what age you are, the future is always an opportunity for fear and anxiety to slip in as we wonder what is around the corner. But having Jesus at the center of your future replaces this fear with faith.
Having Jesus at the center of your future is an act of faith that says, "I don't know what tomorrow will look like, but I trust the One who does." Keeping Jesus at the center of your future is really all about faith. It is walking forward into the dark with only the Lord as a guiding light and knowing that is enough.
Furthermore, Jesus at the center of my future brings great peace. When Jesus is at the center of your future, there is no fear.
As the song "Because He Lives" goes:
Because He lives,
I can face tomorrow!
Because He lives,
All fear is gone.
Because I know
He holds the future
Matthew 6:33-34 says, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Tomorrow is nothing to be feared when we trust the One who holds the future in His hands. He is not only all-powerful and all-knowing over tomorrow; He is good. No matter what comes, the Lord is still good, and His plans are good, even when we don't understand. So what then should we fear? In a society ridden with anxiety, what a testimony to the world it is when God's people live with a sure and steady confidence in the future, even if troubles come. The human heart craves clarity and control, but Jesus calls us to something greater, trust in Him.
Does the unknown future breed fear within you?
I am less than a month away from my due date, and our son will, Lord willing, join us soon. I have had many people ask me if I am nervous about giving birth. While there is great anticipation, I can gladly say that I am not afraid. I know it will be hard, I know there will be pain, I know that there are risks, but despite it all, I trust the Lord, and that dissolves fear.
As the passage in Matthew says, "Seek first his Kingdom." This is the key of keeping Jesus at the center of your future. Instead of obsessing over the unknown to come, seek His Kingdom. Look to know the character of God deeper and wider so that your trust in Him might be bolstered.
