Despite all the wonderful and educational toys we have in our house, some of my toddler's current favorite things to play with are: the lid of the trash can that holds her dirty diapers, the fireplace, the oven drawer, and the controls on the dishwasher. When we try to stop or redirect her, she often gets upset. She's too young to understand that as parents, we put certain guidelines and boundaries in place because we want to keep her safe—not because we don't want her to have any fun.
Have you ever talked to someone who believes God is no fun and all His rules and restrictions mean that He doesn't want us to have any fun in life either? God's commands are in place for the same reason a parent sets limits. He knows what's best for us. He sees more than we see. He knows that the things He's told us not to do will hurt us, either in the short term or the long term, and they aren't for our ultimate good.
Psalm 19:7-8 provides a beautiful look at the benefits of God's word:
The law of the Lord is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.
If a toddler understood gravity, fire, or electricity the way we do, hopefully they wouldn't play with the things that could hurt them. Likewise, we don't understand everything the way God does, so we must trust that His commands are in place for a reason.
Are there any dirty trash cans of sin in your life that you keep going back to? Any boundaries God has set that you keep testing that could lead to danger? Any commands you continually ignore? God's ways offer so much better. They refresh our souls, make us wise, and give us joy and light. Will you trust that your Heavenly Father has your best interest at heart?
