If you've ever tried to feed a toddler, you know that it's a full-contact sport. Food is equally (if not more) likely to end up on their hair, their face, your face, the floor, or the wall than it is in the toddler's mouth. I do my best to offer a variety of healthy and hopefully tasty meals to my daughter. But my best efforts are often met with complete indifference. I watch in disappointment as those foods made with love are pitched onto the floor without a care in the world. Yet, when she's especially hungry or likes something, she'll devour every bite with enthusiasm.
I wonder if God looks at us with the same disappointment when it comes to His word. The Holy Spirit inspired dozens of authors over centuries so God could craft a careful narrative that reveals His character and ultimately points to the person of Jesus and God's plan for salvation. Yet how often do His children fail to appreciate His book? We ignore it or push it aside. Sometimes this is because we're more interested in playing. Maybe we find it boring. Sometimes we aren't in the mood for what He's cooked up today. His words are challenging or convicting, and we'd rather focus on the parts we easily agree with and ignore the rest.
Jesus says in Matthew 4:4 that "man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God." In Psalm 119:103, David writes, "How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Not only is God's word daily sustenance, but it's supposed to taste good to us!
God's word is there for us every day. The Creator of the universe continuously offers His truth, His love, and His guidance, the same way I keep putting meals in front of my toddler, hoping eventually she'll eat them.
The next time we're tempted to pass on by, ignore, outright disregard, or simply not show interest in what God wants to feed us through His word, I hope we remember a toddler throwing nutritious and lovingly prepared food onto the floor. May we never take God's word so lightly. May we instead be like a child who, when she's very hungry, will shovel food into her mouth faster than she can chew and devour every bite because it provides life.
