Grace in Tragedy

Grace in Tragedy

I encourage all who are reading this devotional today to be sensitive to those around you. They may appear, on the surface, to be ok, but everyone is fighting a battle.

Grace in Tragedy

"The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart,
And saves such as have a contrite spirit."

(Psalm 34:18)

I have seen this verse played out in our church many times. The latest and perhaps the most powerful example was last week when a new family dedicated their children to the Lord, joining ten others who also dedicated their children. It was a joyous occasion for our church family.

What made this family's dedication unique was the heartbreaking circumstance; their 14-year-old daughter took her life the previous Friday night. Even amid terrible grief, they chose to dedicate their remaining children to Jesus. I heard the mom speak at the funeral at our church a week ago today, and she said, "It is only by the grace of God that I can stand here today. I love Him so much. And I hope that you would too." The dad shared his thoughts about our church, saying, "Everybody says that they have your back until hard things happen. You guys ran toward us!" I am incredibly proud of our church–proud in a good way. Our staff, deacons, and a Connect Group all stepped up and continue to help during this extremely difficult time.

As David wrote in our verse for today, the LORD is near the brokenhearted. He saves those who have a contrite heart. I cannot think of a greater tragedy for a family to endure than for one of their children to take their own life. But it is in those moments that we can see the love and grace of God shining brightly through the dark clouds of tragedy.

As a pastor, I have had to deal with too many suicides. When someone makes the wrong decision on a bad day, there is no coming back from it. This one act can deeply wound and scar the loved ones who are left to pick up the pieces. If you are depressed and considering taking your life, I beg you, I implore you, please do not do that! Please turn to God in prayer and cry out to Him. He will be there for you. Then speak to another person and ask for help.

I encourage all who are reading this devotional today to be sensitive to people around you. They may appear, on the surface, to be okay, but everyone is fighting a battle. Some are fighting and losing. Be the hands and feet of Jesus and love them, listen to them, and help them.

In the next two devotions, I will share with you an excellent article written by a friend of mine on the topic of grief. I think it will bless and equip you.
