"I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever, with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations."
(Psalm 89:1)
On May 13th at 4:18AM, my sweet baby boy was born. There is nothing like the birth of a child, and there is something extra special about having your first child. Becoming a mother has already changed me as I learn to sacrifice and give of myself for him every day.
Our little boy is named Ethan. Ethan is a Hebrew name which means strong or steadfast. We pray that he would grow to have a steadfast faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and that how he loves others and works hard would be marked by a strong and steady steadfastness.
The author of Psalm 89 is named Ethan. Verse 1 says, "I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever, with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations." I pray this as a life verse over my son. So, in honor of my little guy, a true gift from the Lord, this week, all of the devotions will come from Psalm 89.
Psalm 89 is a complex psalm written in a time of political turmoil and challenge for God's people, likely when Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and the first temple and the Davidic monarchy was ended. Ethan writes in the wake of these events and yet begins his psalm with praise. The author of Psalm 89 could be the same Ethan mentioned in 1 Chronicles 15 who was a worship leader, a musician who played as the ark was brought into Jerusalem. He was a man who loved to praise God. With instruments, with words, and certainly with his life, he was a worshiper.
Take a look back at verse 1 written above. How have you seen the Lord's steadfast love and faithfulness in your life? All stories of God's faithfulness, both big and small, are powerful testimonies which strengthen your own faith and the faith of others when encouragement is needed. How are you "making known [God's] faithfulness to all generations"? These stories of God's faithfulness ought to be shared and passed down so that others, including future generations, may know of the enduring trustworthiness of the Lord.
I'm thinking about this today while looking at my 10-week-old son. How will I raise him to know of the faithfulness of the Lord? What stories do I want to be sure to tell him about how I've seen God at work in my life? How can I disciple Him to trust the Lord no matter what comes in his life?
Tell someone, particularly a young person, about how God has been faithful to you in your life. Don't let these amazing testimonies be forgotten, but use them to bolster faith in another. Pass it on.
