This week we are studying parts of Psalm 89. Yesterday we looked at verse 1, but today we will enjoy verses 1-18. I encourage you to read the whole passage, as I will just reference portions of it.
In verses 1-18 of Psalm 89, Ethan writes words of praise to God. He speaks of God's superiority, might, creation, steadfastness, and more. Let's look at some of the things that the psalmist praises God for and be encouraged today that these things are true about our God.
Psalm 89:2: "For I said, 'Steadfast love will be built up forever; in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.'" God's faithfulness is established in the heavens. Isn't it good news that his faithfulness is beyond the instability of this world? It is firmly anchored and immovable, established in heaven.
Psalm 89:8: "O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you?" Faithfulness comes up a lot in this psalm as it addresses God's faithfulness to the Davidic covenant. Faithfulness isn't just something that God has or does, it is who He is. God's nature is that of faithfulness, and He cannot be separated from it. Praise God for His being consistently clothed in faithfulness.
Psalm 89:9: "You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them." Do things around you seem chaotic right now? Do things going on around the world seem chaotic? Don't let this stir up chaos within your heart. God is in control and can still the raging sea. He is in control over creation: from the natural world to the path of your life, God is solidly in control and can calm whatever chaos you find yourself in.
Psalm 89:15: "Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face." He is our light, the light that reveals the way and gives us the direction we seek, that brightens any darkness, and exposes sin and evil. The phrase "light of your face" also speaks to the warmth of His presence into which we are welcomed by grace.
As I've said many times before, worship is all about God, and the Bible is predominantly a book about God. What other things does the psalmist praise God for in Psalm 89:1-18 for which you can worship Him today?
