Visiting Liberty University

"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

(John 8:32)

The Go Tell Camp that Ashley and I attended in June was held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. They were gracious hosts, and it was a blessing to be on the campus and get to know some of their leaders. Dr. Dondi Costin is the current president of LU. He has served for two years and is doing an outstanding job. He is a retired Major General of the Air Force. He spent some time teaching aerospace at TCU in Fort Worth, TX. He graduated from the Air Force Academy and from Southwestern Seminary, also located in Fort Worth. While he was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, VA, he attended Liberty Baptist Church prior to me serving there as the pastor. After I spoke one morning, Dr. Costin stayed and hung out with Ashley and me, and we spoke with him for about 30 minutes. He was so gracious with his time and was such an encourager and a delight to be around.

Here is a picture with Ashley, Dr. Costin, and me:

LU is the largest Evangelical university in the world with over 130,000 students. Yes, you read that correctly! They have 16,000 students on campus and another 115,000 online. It is precisely what the founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell, Sr., had dreamed of. He wanted LU to be for the Evangelical Christian what BYU is for Mormons and Notre Dame is for Catholics. The campus is stunning in its beauty. The football stadium and facilities are first class. The chaplain of the LU football team, Dr. Ed Gomes, is such a delightful man who loves Jesus and loves people. He gave us a private tour of the football facilities, and wow, I was impressed.

Here is a picture of Dr. Gomes along with Go Tell Camp Executive Director, Rick Gage, Dr. Daryl Jones, chaplain for the University of Miami Hurricanes, and me:
Pray for LU that God continues to bless them as they help educate many students to be champions for Christ. In the fall, they will have 10,000 students meeting each Wednesday and Friday for Convocation. It is a powerful time of worship and hearing from speakers from all over the world.

I am a big fan of Liberty University. Go Flames!
