"A person's heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps."
(Proverbs 16:9, CSB)
Recently, Kyndall, the boys (Tabor and Miller), and I went to Disneyland with Pops and Nay Nay (those are my parents' grandparent names)! We had a great time! We rode rides, ate food, waited in lines, used Lightning Lanes, and did all the things. Now, getting to Disneyland was a bit hectic. You see, when I say we went to Disneyland with our two boys, that means we had to travel with the two boys. Traveling with an almost two-year-old and an almost one-year-old is an adventure! There were lots of snacks, toys, and activities, including getting up from the seat, getting into the seat, waving at the people behind us, grabbing the chair in front of us, shaking it, and all the other things traveling with two boys entails.
The trip to Disneyland was a threefold journey: drive to Tulsa, flight and layover in Vegas, and then fly to Long Beach, arriving at the destination. The first flight was not bad! It was a long one, but one where we had three seats to ourselves and Tabor (our almost two-year-old) could move around and do his thing. The flight from Vegas to Long Beach was a doozy. An employee informed us that the flight would be at maximum capacity. This meant that our dream of three seats to ourselves was out the window. We got to our seats, and long story short, we all couldn't be on the same row due to a safety concern, which was fair. We found out this news after 99.99% of the plane was boarded and everyone was in their seats, and luckily for us, the last seat was one row behind where Kyndall and Tabor were going to sit. I grabbed Miller and sat in the middle seat. It was a tight seat, and about five minutes into the flight, my rambunctious two-year-old wanted to be with "dada," and I traded my chill, smiley, and calm almost one-year-old for my wild nearly two-year-old. I battled with him grabbing the people sitting beside me, going through every toy we brought, and him standing up and down for the flight. Needless to say, it was an adventure, but we finally got to Disneyland, and it was great!
You may be surprised to hear that I was able to strike up a great conversation with the guy who was sitting next to me and Tabor on that flight! I got to hear how he was about to get married and was excited to start a family with his soon-to-be wife. He told me about his occupation and where he was headed. He shared his travel experiences with me and also spoke about his upbringing. We then discussed what a relationship with Jesus entails and whether he had ever placed his faith and trust in Jesus for salvation. He identified as a follower of Jesus, a Christian, and soon after we landed, we were both on our way to our separate places.
Why do I share this story with you?
It wasn't in my plan to talk to that guy on the second flight. When Kyndall and I thought we had a "great plan" of us being able to make sure our little dudes didn't lose their minds on an airplane, God had other plans for me. A major inconvenience for my and Kyndall's "plan" was a divine appointment that God had for me. What seemed to be out of "my plan" was precisely the steps the Lord had for me.
Here is my encouragement for you today: "A person's heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps." Don't be so "plan-focused" today that you miss divine appointments! Let your plan for the day be one where you are guided and led by the Holy Spirit, and you be obedient to the steps that the Lord has planned for you. There is nothing wrong with a good plan, just don't let it get in the way of you being led by the spirit of God. Who knows what kind of encounters God has planned for you today? Who knows what divine appointments God has planned for you today?
