"Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them."
(Hebrews 7:25)
I heard an amazing story that I wanted to share with you today, the story of a young man named John. Jason Curry, President of Texas Baptists Home for Children, shared John's story at a meeting I attended last month.
John was a young man who had a difficult childhood, going from one foster home to another. One family took him in initially but returned him to the Children's Home, and it was devastating. So, he chose to be silent; this is called selective mute. Even though he could physically speak, he chose not to because no one was listening to him. His silence became a shield of protection.
But God, who is able to do all things, had other plans for John. He was placed in the foster home of a wonderful family. They were not looking to add another family member per se, they simply wanted to help John. They took him in to give him love and acceptance and not try to "fix" him. They stayed and gave stability. They showered him with love, grace, and consistency. John accepted Christ as his Savior.
One day, the social worker and adoption lawyer walked outside to where John was. They told John, "We know you are not talking, but do you want this family you are staying with to adopt you?" John responded to them by kneeling on the ground, and in the dirt, he wrote the last name of this family, and then he pointed to his heart.
Recently, at age 15 John went to student camp, and he stood up and spoke. He said God has called him to preach! Jason Curry writes, "Like, wow! From silence to sermons, from trauma to testimony. John is not eloquent. But God is going to use him to do incredible things, isn't He?"
Thank you for joining me this week on this Christological journey. Hebrews 7:21 says Jesus' priestly order is forever; verse 24 says Jesus continues forever, and verse 25 says He always lives. We serve a resurrected, very much alive Jesus Christ! He always lives to do what? To pray for you and me, to intercede for us.
Jesus prays for us. He is our intercessor. That is such a profound theological thought. Dane Ortlund asks about the importance of Jesus praying for us, considering His finished work for our salvation on the cross. Why is the intercession necessary? He states, "Intercession applies what the atonement accomplished." (Source: The Heart of Jesus: How He really Feels about You, p.32-33)
Jesus is amazing.
