"Then the Angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, 'Jacob.' And I said, 'Here I am.'"
(Genesis 31:11)
The Hebrew word hineni means "Here I am." It expresses readiness, availability, attentiveness, and a willingness to respond when God calls. Jacob used this word when God spoke to him during a significant transition in his life. Jacob did not yet know everything God was going to do, but he was willing to listen and respond.
Most of us would prefer to know the entire plan before we take the first step. We want to know where we are going, what will happen along the way, and how everything will turn out. God, however, often gives us enough light for the next step without showing us the entire journey. Jacob's response reminds us that faith begins with availability. "Here I am" means, "Lord, You have my attention. I am willing to listen. I am willing to follow."
That is especially important when life is changing around us. Change can bring uncertainty, questions, and even fear. When circumstances are changing, we can respond with rejection, apathy, or availability. The message of Jacob's life challenges us to choose availability: to remain open to what God may be doing even when we do not understand everything.
Being available to God does not mean that we have no questions or fears. It means that God has our "yes" before we know all the details. Jacob could say, "Here I am," because his confidence was ultimately in the God who was speaking to him.
Today, begin your prayer with those simple words: "Lord, here I am." Give God your attention before giving Him your requests. Ask Him what He wants you to see, where He wants you to go, and what He wants you to do. Then be willing to obey when He makes the next step clear.
Prayer: Lord, here I am. I give You my worship, my plans, my questions, and my future. Help me to be available and willing to follow You even when I do not know the whole plan. Give me the faith to take the next step You place before me. Amen.
