"Moses! Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am."
(Exodus 3:4)
Five simple letters capture a powerful posture of faith: hineni—"Here I am."
The story of Moses reminds us that saying "Here I am" does not mean that we have everything figured out. Moses didn't. He had questions. He had fears. He made excuses. He felt inadequate. He even begged God to send someone else. But ultimately, Moses obeyed.
That may be one of the most encouraging things about his story. God did not choose a man who felt perfectly confident and completely capable. God chose a man who had to learn to trust God's presence and power. And today, God still uses ordinary people. The question for each of us is not whether we are extraordinary. It is whether we are available.
God may call someone to something that seems enormous, such as leading people or beginning a ministry. But He may also call someone to something that seems very small: caring for an elderly parent, adopting a child, sharing a testimony, forgiving someone, serving in a ministry, going on a mission trip, confronting an injustice, becoming a foster parent, changing careers, or simply doing the right thing when it costs something.
Sometimes God's call is to salvation—to surrender our lives to Jesus Christ. Sometimes it is to believer's baptism, to become part of a church family, or to accept a particular assignment of service. Whatever the call may be, God asks us to respond.
The question is simple: Will you say yes? Hineni. "Here I am." There may be a task God has placed on your heart that you have resisted. Maybe you've told yourself you're too old, too young, too busy, too inexperienced, too afraid, or simply not qualified.
Remember Moses. Remember Gideon. Remember Jeremiah. Remember Jonah. God knows what He is doing when He calls you.
You don't need to know every detail before you obey. You don't need to know how everything will work out. You don't need to have all the strength you think you need.
You need to trust the God who calls. And don't try to walk alone. Be sure and share God's calling or burden with another person who can walk with you and help you obey. Your hineni may become the beginning of something far greater than you could ever imagine.
Ask God specifically, "What are You calling me to do?" Write down the first thing that comes to mind. Then share that calling or burden with a trusted, mature Christian who can pray with you and help hold you accountable. Finally, take one concrete step of obedience today.
Prayer: Lord, here I am. I surrender my plans, my fears, my excuses, and my limitations to You. I want to be available. Give me the faith to say hineni when You call. Use my ordinary life for Your extraordinary purposes. Help me trust You when the assignment is difficult and obey You when I am afraid. May my life continually say, "Here I am, Lord. Send me." Amen.
