"Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. And He said to them, 'The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors.' But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.'"
(Luke 22:24-27)
Recently, during one of my quiet times with the Lord in the morning, I read these words from Jesus in Luke 22. Have you ever read a biblical text and had it simply overwhelm and amaze you? I was deeply impacted by these words of Jesus. While my wife Ashley and I were walking, I shared these verses with her, and when I got to the part where Jesus said, "Yet I am among you as the One who serves," I got teary-eyed.
Jesus has given us the example He expects His followers to emulate. We are not to occupy ourselves with thoughts of grandeur, greatness, and being the best. We are to have the mind of Christ and be humble servants. Philippians 2:5-7 states, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men."
To be a humble servant like our Lord means we are meek but not weak. We do not let people run over or mistreat us or others. But we do seek ways to help and serve more than looking for help or to be served. Jesus' pathway to true happiness and a joy-filled life is not what the world believes or lives. Most people look out for themselves above all else. They do not seek to be last but first. Human nature has not changed since the times of Christ. We still seek recognition, and when we are not esteemed as we think we should be, then we are upset.
What kind of world would we have if everyone lived like Jesus and sought not fame but service? What kind of homes would we have if we all adopted the mentality of, "How can I serve you better today?" What kind of churches would we have? Jesus's way is not the easy, well-traveled path in the world. But let us who know the Lord truly follow Him so that we can get to the point where we can say, like He did, "I am among you as the One who serves."
