"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
(Hebrews 4:12, ESV)
In late February, Cross Students (where I am a student pastor) had our "Freedom Weekend." This is like a mini-conference over Friday and Saturday. It was one of life change, fun, small groups, and worship, and it was all about Jesus. We had an amazing time and saw God do some INCREDIBLE things.
Personally, one of the most impactful moments of the weekend was when we did breakouts. The breakout I attended was "Building A Life of Spiritual Disciplines." This breakout was led by a guy named Brandon Moore who oversees chapel and spiritual life of Shiloh Christian School. Now, pridefully, I wasn't really looking forward to being in this breakout; it was one I was assigned to, and having heard a lot on spiritual disciplines in my own life and in seminary, my heart wasn't the greatest going into it, but I asked the Lord to speak to me... and WOW! He did!
Brandon did a great job in his presentation, and honestly, it was a lot of stuff that I had never thought about before, and it was very soul-enriching for me. (Side note: I am thankful the Holy Spirit gets through to us even when our hearts aren't in the best posture.) The big part for me was when he opened up a Q&A time and had the following interaction:
Student: How do you know how much of the Bible to read in your quiet time?
Brandon: (Without missing a beat or having an ounce of hesitation) "Read until you hear from God."
When Brandon responded to the student's question, the Holy Spirit was making sure I was listening and really hearing that statement. I immediately thought to myself, "I have to try this!"
So here is what I would like for us to do this week: I want to let you in on what God was teaching me through Psalm 18! I will be honest: we won't cover the whole chapter, but we will cover a good amount of verses.
Before we get to Psalm 18 tomorrow, think about the truth found in Hebrews 4:12. We can confidently approach the Word of God knowing that we can hear from God because the word of God is "living and active!" We can "read until we hear from God" because when we read, we can know that God is talking to us! How incredible is that! So this week, let's get geared up for Psalm 18, and I hope as you read, you will hear from God!
