"Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
(Ephesians 5:20)
One of my newest favorite songs is "Thankful" by Forest Frank. In this catchy, cool-vibed, gospel hip-hop song, he focuses on the many reasons he is thankful to God. Interestingly, it is not the big things in life we would normally associate with being grateful. He highlights the little things that we all take for granted, especially if we live in the USA. My favorite part is when He gives thanks for the most important person, and that is Jesus. Here are the lyrics and the link you can click to enjoy the song yourself:
I've got so much to be thankful for
Look, I've got a roof and a bed
A couple groceries to stay fed
I've got a phone and clean water
And some shoes when I wanna go farther
Today I've got so much to be thankful for (Hey)
I woke up this morning thinking, "Thank You, Lord" (Hey)
For giving me everything I could ever need and more
I've got so much to be thankful for (Ohh, yeah, run it back)
Ayy, I have lights and a fan
A couple people who know who I am (Know)
I have a car and clean clothes
Pots and pans I can cook on the stove
I have the sun and air in my lungs
And a big mess that I get to clean up
But most of all, one thing's true
Jesus, I'm grateful for You (You, You, ahh)

I read some of the comments on the video from people who gave testimonies of how this song impacted them. One caught my attention:
"One day I was so depressed and so unhappy with life, and I didn't even want to be alive that day, but I put this song on, and it brought things into perspective. I am so thankful for this song. Because it really lifted my spirits, it brought me out of that depression. Thank you, Jesus."
Perhaps you can relate to this individual. You are going through a hard season and find it impossible to be thankful for what has happened to you. Ephesians 5:20 teaches that you can be thankful for even that. No, this does not mean we are to be masochists, people who love suffering. But even in the suffering, we can praise God for it, because we know He has a plan, and ultimately, there is no suffering in heaven!
