"Your kingdom come. You will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
(Matthew 6:10)
My new favorite song is "Father, Let It Be" by Sidewalk Prophets. The lyrics are strong, and I really like how the writer addresses in prayer each member of the Godhead: Father, Son (Jesus), and Spirit. The chorus goes like this:
Father, let it be
Help me to believe
Jesus, tell me stories of times You felt like me
Spirit, let me see
The forest through the trees
Help me understand these are the plans You have for me
If it's your will, God, let it be.
I do not know the backstory of the song, but it feels to me that the writer is facing a tough circumstance or decision, and he decides to turn it over completely to God and pray that His will be done.
Jesus certainly said this to His Father, if not these exact words, and we know He did so with His actions, laying down His life. Three times He prayed that this cup (of suffering) be removed from Him, but each time He resolved to do the Father's will.
Matthew 26:39-44 states: "He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, 'O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.' Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, 'What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.' Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, 'O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.' And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words."
God entrusts hard things and assignments to those He trusts. In the history of our church (Great Hills Baptist Church), God has given us strong assignments. We have changed our name three times and are about to do so for the fourth time. (We are excited to be called Waypoint Church!) We sold our church property and relocated north in the 1980s, and we will do the same in the year 2026: sell and move north, albeit just a few miles north.
Oftentimes God will bring us to the end of ourselves, our abilities, expertise, experience, education, etc., and ask us to do hard things. To accomplish what God requires of us, we must have faith. That is all we need to have: trust in God that He is in control. He will lead us in all He asks us to do. For us at GHBC, God has given the assignment to monetize so we can mobilize for better Gospel advancement. We leave behind a ton of good memories and gratefulness to God for the faithfulness of His people through the many decades of ministry at 10500 Jollyville Road.
Is there a tough assignment God is wanting you to accomplish for His glory? What an honor it is to be asked by God to do hard things! Let me encourage you to tell the Lord your answer is yes. He will never ask you to do something without providing all you need to accomplish the task.
