"That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
(Romans 10:9)
Romans 10:9 is my favorite verse in the Bible. When I die and go to heaven, the Lord might tell me that I was saved at age 6, though I do not remember it. But I do know I settled that question of salvation when I was 19 years old. While kneeling by my bed in our home in Mobile, AL, I called out to God to save me, and I quoted Romans 10:9. You may ask, how did I even know what Romans 10:9 said? I had memorized that verse and others as a ministerial student in college.
When I studied church history in seminary, I was pleased to read that the same thing happened to some men I looked up to in the Christian faith: George Whitfield, John Wesley, and his brother Charles. They were all students at Oxford University and members of what they called the Holy Club. They were very disciplined and memorized Scripture. None of them were saved, but later on they were born again. These men went on to accomplish much for the glory of Christ and the spreading of His kingdom here on earth. If you have not seen the movie, A Great Awakening, I encourage you to watch it. It is excellent!
I am almost 62 years old and have been walking with Christ and preaching His Gospel for 43 years. He has been so very kind, good, and gracious to me. He has blessed me with a wife of almost 40 years, 3 kids who love Jesus and are married to people who love Jesus, and 9 wonderful grandkids. God has allowed me to serve as the lead pastor of 4 great churches and to teach at 2 wonderful seminaries. He also blessed Ashley and I in June 2004 and allowed us to start DFEA, which the Lord continues to bless and use for His glory.
You might be wondering why I am sharing all of this with you about my life. Am I okay? Is my health good? The answer to these questions is yes. Thanks to God, I am feeling great, even though my right shoulder remains frozen after a year (ouch).
Over the next couple of days, I will share with you my top ten things for you to consider to help you draw closer to Jesus, walk with Him, and serve Him well. I hope these ten principles will bless and encourage you and inspire you to do all you can to serve the Lord Jesus and tell as many people about Him as you can.
