Who in your life has shared not only the Gospel truths with you but their very lives?

People: Tom Sherman

This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Lead Student Pastor for Cross Church, Springdale, AR campus.
- Pastor Danny
"We cared so much for you that we were pleased to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us."

(1 Thessalonians 2:8, CSB)

Besides my dad, Tom Sherman is the most influential man in my life! Tom came into my life in May of 2016. I was fresh out of college, single, had just started an internship, and he came as a recommendation from my boss. I first met Tom over breakfast, and he told me what he thought discipleship was. He used a quote I have used many times now: "Discipleship is life on life for life." He asked me to pray about whether this was something I would be interested in, and, if it was, to let him know I was serious. I told him the next week I was in, and for the next almost seven years of my life, Tom Sherman poured into me! We met over meals, over coffee, and in his home. He walked me through my first full-time job, dating Kyndall, getting engaged to Kyndall (we had our engagement party at his house), getting married, my first few years of marriage, and then praying through and accepting a job transition to Arkansas.

Tom Sherman pointed me towards scripture, pointed me towards manhood, called me out when I needed it, and made me think about things I hadn't thought about. Tom also understood that we were supposed to invest in others around us, and he would constantly ask me about who I was discipling and how that was going! Tom really lived out 1 Thessalonians 2:8 for me! He shared biblical truths and reminded me of the Gospel often, and he shared his very life with me for those seven years. I am forever thankful for his investment in my life. Whenever I think about Tom, I think of a discipler who lived out "life on life for life."

Who in your life has shared not only the Gospel truths with you but their very lives? Tom is someone I will forever remember not only as a discipler but also a father in the faith! Tom, thank you for pouring into me all those years and even now!

What about you? Do you have a Tom in your life? If you don't, who do you need to ask to pour into you? Sometimes, for us to have a mentor, we need to go out and find someone we respect and look up to and ask if they will share their life with us! Don't be afraid; make the ask! If you do have someone who is sharing their life and Gospel truths with you, reach out to them and let them know what they mean to you! Don't take for granted those who are sharing and pouring their very lives into you!
