"You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
(1 John 4:4)
The week prior to me preaching on this biblical text at our church was a difficult one, spiritually speaking. Have you ever had weeks or even seasons like this, where the enemy of your soul is doing all he can to trip you up or discourage you? I know I have as well, and this was one of those weeks. I know, however, why Satan was throwing at me anything he could think of to trip me up. That was the week we taped and sent out an update video to our church family explaining the exciting changes coming soon related to the relocation of our church. But an even greater reason for the spiritual opposition was the enemy knew I was preaching on 1 John 4:4!
We who are of God, children of the Heavenly Father, born again by the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus, are overcomers. We have been given the power and authority to wage successful spiritual warfare against the enemy of our souls. He is a formidable enemy, for sure. We should not underestimate Satan and the power of darkness, but we should not overestimate them either.
We need to remind ourselves of the truth of 1 John 4:4. There are times when we will be persecuted, in the minority, and outright ridiculed for believing the Bible. But we must not let worldly advances, demonic oppression, and temporal setbacks diminish our confidence in the Lord. There are times of extreme setbacks that make no sense to us here on earth, but we have the promise of God that all things work together for our good (Romans 8:28), and that God is greater than the devil.
What setback, trial, or difficulty are you presently experiencing? Let me remind you that if you know Jesus, you are on the winning team, and God is still in control. He will give you the victory! With the Holy Spirit of God living within every true follower of Christ, we will overcome the devil's false teaching, temptations, and diabolical intentions leveled at us by the evil one. Why? Because Jesus is greater!
