"Righteousness exalts a nation,
But sin is a reproach to any people."
(Proverbs 14:34)
I hope you had a happy and blessed Independence Day with family and loved ones celebrating the birthday of our great nation. This year was a special and grand celebration for sure, being our 250th. Nations around the world much older than us, like European countries, think we are mere children by comparison to the age of their nations. But of all the nations in the world, even though we are one of the youngest, we are the most blessed and prosperous nation on earth. Why is that? I believe it is because God has shown us His favor. Our nation was founded on biblical principles which are woven into the fabric of the writings of our Founding Fathers, our historic documents, and even in our national monuments.
John Adams, our second president, wrote in a 1798 letter to the Massachusetts Militia: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." Amen, I agree.
The title of today's devotion is taken from the song "Saturday in the Park" by the rock band Chicago (1972), one of my favorite bands while growing up in the 80s. "Saturday in the Park" is one of the most popular songs written by keyboardist/singer Robert Lamm. Lamm was having difficulty creating a new song, so he decided to go to Central Park in NYC to simply watch people. He was inspired as he watched the people enjoy their summer day. Here are some of the lyrics of the hit song by Chicago:
Saturday in the park
I think it was the Fourth of July
Another day in the park
I think it was the Fourth of July
People reaching, people touching
A real celebration
Waiting for us all
If we want it, really want it
We had a fun time celebrating on Saturday, July 4th. We had a house full of people, mostly family. We laughed, prayed, ate a lot of food, and simply enjoyed the blessings of God upon our lives, families, and nation.
Every day I pray for our nation, and I invite you to join me. Ask God daily for His hand of favor on us and that He would bring revival to His Church and spiritual awakening for the ones who do not know or worship Him.
