IDENTITY: I Am with Someone Powerful

IDENTITY: I Am with Someone Powerful

When you consider just how powerful God is juxtaposed with the fact that He wants to have a relationship with you, how does that make you feel?

IDENTITY: I Am with Someone Powerful

This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Lead Student Pastor for Cross Church, Springdale, AR campus.

"The Lord of Heaven's Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress."

(Psalm 46:7, NLT)

I am a huge basketball fan! I love watching and playing basketball, and I even coached it for a couple of years. The ironic part of all that is that I'm 5 feet 8 inches tall, so basketball doesn't love me. I remember playing some pickup basketball once, and my lack of vertical prowess was really stacking up against me. I was constantly getting pushed around and falling to the ground because people thought they could push around the little guy. After about thirty minutes of this, I had reached my tipping point when I got thrown on the ground for the umpteenth time, and I was about to say something when I heard this: "HEY, MAN! What's your PROBLEM?!"

As I was getting up from the ground, I recognized that my teammate was coming to my defense! Now, this teammate happened to be a former D1 defensive lineman who played on an NFL roster, quite the opposite of the vertically challenged 5"8' me. When he said that to the guy on the other team, the whole team began walking away, and the fouling and pushing on me stopped. Why? Because my teammate was a powerful dude, and they didn't want ANY of him! (Shoutout Corey!)

Why do I tell you this story? I tell you this because, as a new creation in Christ, someone loved by God, and someone who is a Child of God, you are with someone very powerful! When we are walking through this life, we have the King of Kings and Lord of Lords living in our hearts, who is with us every day and every moment of the day. We need to remember this! We need to live like this is true! I know in my own life, my perspective changes when I consider the truth that God is with me! It makes the temptations I am going through not as tempting. It makes the loneliness feel less lonely. It gives me confidence that someone powerful is with me, and that I am not in this life alone!

Psalm 46 has a well-known section, but it also contains a comforting verse about the powerful one who is with us as followers of Jesus. The Lord of Heaven's Armies is with us! The commander of heaven's armies is with you wherever you go! Think about it: if the most powerful general walked side-by-side with you wherever you went, would you not feel like you were with someone powerful? Now amplify that general by a million, and we haven't even scratched the surface of the Lord of Heaven's Armies! He is with us, He lives inside our hearts, and He wants to be close to us! I don't know about you, but when I think about being with the Lord of Heaven's Armies, my confidence in HIM increases, and I walk through this life knowing I am with a powerful person!
